Fighting Fit

It’s official- exercise is good for not just the body but the brain too! This article from Harvard is really interesting – don’t be put off by the standard picture of a man boxing on there…sadly a lot of research is male centric, but that’s a whole other issue for another day!The recommended 30 minutes of moderate cardio 5 x per week improves cognitive function and protects the brain from cognitive decline. This can help protect against Alzheimer’s and is also great for improving alertness and memory for women experiencing menopausal cognitive symptoms such as brain fog, memory issues, anxiety and depression. These symptoms result from the decreased levels of oestrogen- there are many oestrogen receptors in the brain ….we cannot control this decrease (even with HRT oestrogen levels would still be lower than in our pre menopausal years) but we CAN control how much exercise we do! It doesn’t have to be running – it could be swimming, hiking, dancing, tennis….anything that gets you heart rate up (and that you enjoy!) doing…it’s a win/win for ALL the muscles of your body, heart and brain!
